Hinoki House

The Hinoki House was everything we hoped for and more. The property is absolutely beautiful and offers a unique tranquility and peacefulness that we hadn't experienced in any other rental before. The management team and cleaning crew went above and beyond to make us comfortable and included some thoughtful touches throughout the house that made us feel extraordinarily welcome, i.e. the New Years confetti popper, the dog toy in the basket and the towel swans! Wow! It made such a difference to us, thank you so much. The check-in process was seamless and the management team was excellent in their communication with us. We will definitely be returning as soon as possible! Thank you, Mendocino Preferred!

First - the house is gorgeous, beautifully furnished and equipped, neighborhood terrific and location great, halfway between Mendo and Fort Bragg , Mendocino preferred is a a great rental agency providing premium services to its guests- However the house is starting to show its age and is in need of repairs - We experienced a couple of roof leaks during our stays (heavy storm weather) requiring buckets to be set on the floor to prevent further water damage - plus we got an extra unwanted pet in the upstairs master bedroom(a bat) which was a concern for the couple staying in this room and a bit of a dampener of the overall experience - Hope they will get of these taken care of soon, and would confirm it is fixed before renting the place again

Mendocino Preferred Vacation Rentals made the booking experience easy including key pickup and drop off. They were readily available by phone for questions. The Hinoki House is really impressive architecturally. It was prefect for two couples and our two small dogs. Nice touch, two dog biscuits were provided! It was nice to relax on the porch, though new garden furniture is warranted. The kitchen is well organized. We could easily walk to the Lighthouse and the bluffs. We will be back!

We enjoyed the architecture and feel of the home with all the windows and the small view of the ocean. House was comfortable and clean and kitchen had most everything one needs. Our only complaint was that the beds weren’t real comfortable. The lighthouse was a nice walk through the neighborhood connecting to a trail in the park. The house was close to town and activities.

This was our first Vrbo rental, and we couldn't be more impressed. The property was exactly as described; the second we walked in the door, we felt right at home. The property management was professional, friendly, and very responsive. responsive to all our questions and requests. The overall experience left us looking forward to a return visit.

Lovely Japanese style home in the woods of South Caspar. The house was very clean. My husband unplugged the master bathroom sink; this should have been addressed prior to our stay. Also be aware that the plumbing is noisy when running the dishwasher, but it works fine. Would definitely like to stay here again.

The bones of this house are beautiful and the location is great for getting to Mendocino or Fort Bragg easily. We loved our time at this lovely older house. When we weren’t out hiking around or shopping, we spent time playing games around the big table.

This was our second stay at Hinoki House and we were so glad we booked this beautiful property again. Lovely, spiritual feel to the house with its traditional Japanese architectural details, and good location between Mendocino and Fort Bragg, with easy access to trails, ocean, hikes, shops, etc. Would book again.

Beautiful home with incredible Japanese architectural elements. Large naturally landscaped yard and excellent location. Stunning cove and ocean views just a short walk away. Nicely positioned between Mendocino and Ft. Bragg. Highly recommended.

The home was spacious, well organized and clean. Great for a weekend get away with the dogs and friends. Close proximity to the beach and other activities in nearby areas. Using the fireplace at night was lovely and worth the stay.

We had an amazing repeat visit to the Hinoki House, which is a great getaway. The house is beautiful and calming, and we love that we can bring our pup along with us. Everything is easy and convenient and we hope to stay here again!

Very nice house a few minutes outside Mendocino. Property was clean and fully equipped, as advertised. Ideal for a couple or family of 3, since the second bedroom is small and noise carries throughout the house. Unless you want to wake up at dawn, bring eyeshades as many windows are uncovered and the house is full of light very early.

A fabulous getaway home on the north coast for those into Japanese esthetics. Spare and elegant, albeit weathered, the house exudes personality in a quiet, unobtrusive way. If you are not enamored of Japanese style you might find it a bit stark (no nicknacks or homey decorations) but we loved it. Very private, peaceful location, a short walk to the ocean, a short drive to Mendocino or Fort Bragg. Interior was spotless, fully-equipped kitchen (could use a wok) but bring your own cooking oil and condiments, two wood-burning stoves make it warm and cozy. The management had an unusual communication style, downloaded an app onto my phone without my knowledge -- didn't know they could do that, not sure I like it. Otherwise, all was smooth sailing. This was a 20th anniversary celebration for us, just perfect for our taste. Highly recommended.

WE are returning guests. Sadly we found the place upon arrival with dirty dishes and areas which is creepy knowing you're sharing this with strangers. Needs a good going through for broken things as well that people aren't reporting. Bat guano at front entry could use to be cleaned up , otherwise we like and appreciate bats. We left the place cleaner than we found it.
We love the girls in the office, easy going with good communication skills. The new bathroom fixtures were a great change.
It was necessary to wipe the sand and dirt out of the dryer before using it, empty the lint collector and clean the tops of both washer and dryer of filth .Not certain if the dryer door pops open during it's cycle ,it seems it doesn't latch securely- I didn't stand around to watch and only did one load.

Beautiful, calming and functional space to be in. The private courtyard is a plus. Lovely deck facing the meadow. We took in a walk to Caspar beach, Cabrillo Point Lighthouse and a hike at Jughandle State Park, all just minutes away. Would stay here again.

We had a wonderful time at this beautiful house between the cypresses, enveloped in fog. Ocean sounds at night, comfortable beds, very clean and stylish. Mendocino is super cute and there's plenty to do up there in nature as well. We would come back!

This is a beautiful home and lovely area. The home is comfortable and reasonably stocked. We loved the proximity to the lighthouse and beach. Given the cost of the rental, the need to be home when the dishwasher was running and to put away all the dishes before checkout was a bit off-putting. We've not experienced this in any other vacation home. A bit of effort needs to be put into cleaning the open beams for large dust bunnies and spiderwebs, but overall our stay was lovely.

This is by far our favorite rental. We chose the Hinoki House to experience the Japanese architecture, which was authentic and wonderful, but we will be coming back because, in addition, the location is ideal, the beds were comfortable, and it was clean. I hope we can splurge on this place every year!

Great cozy retreat! We loved the location and amenities. The house was clean and had everything we needed. We used the wood burning stove and it was cozy. The fresh flowers on the table were an added bonus.

We usually like to stay in a place with an ocean view but this house was so gorgeous & comfortable that we didn't miss the view. Sunsets through the Cypress trees from the deck were beautiful.

My friend and I were there for photography, so on the go most of the time. Yet this is one of those places you wish for heavy rain, so you can hang out to nest, read, and enjoy it's ambiance. Clean lines, comfortable, nothing excessive, but nothing missing.

The house was beautiful and had everything we needed—with welcome baskets for both humans and dogs! The upstairs bedroom suite was amazing—full of light, wonderful bed, lots of space. The site is beautiful and a short drive to either the lighthouse or a walk on the beach. Just what the doctor ordered!

This house is unusually nice for a rental. Japanese craftsman architecture and pleasing wood work throughout. Great location and neighborhood. Everything was fine. My only caution is that the upstairs bedroom and bath are not centrally heated. Some warm air drifts up the staircase, but it isn't much. There is wood burning stove in the bedroom which we did not use. I don't care much for stoves for heating on a regular basis. No fun getting up in the morning and lighting a fire. Not to mention hauling the wood upstairs. I think an electric heater would work better. Nevertheless, we would rent again.

Hinoki House is charming. It’s located within walking distance of the Pt. Cabrillo lighthouse and Caspar Beach, with accessible walking trails nearby. Inside, the house is cozy and the kitchen well appointed. The back deck and yard are great hangout places on a sunny day, and the two fireplaces inside keep the house toasty on foggy days. The house was immaculate upon our arrival.

This was our second stay at Hinoki House, and we will likely return again. It is an exquisite house full of personality, and in a great location near Pt. Cabrillo Lighthouse and Russian Gulch State Park. Near enough and far enough from everything desirable in Mendocino and Fort Bragg.

3rd visit at this peaceful, quiet, central,pastoral retreat. 4 out of 5 days were warm, and sunny. view of the ocean from the upstairs bedroom.

The home was very well kept and spotlessly clean. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The neighborhood was quiet, except for the sounds of wild turkeys and seals in the distance. We enjoyed walking the trails to the coastal bluffs. Overall just a wonderful place to stay.

We stayed for a week, but the time flew by! The house is beautiful and well furnished. Walking access to the coastal bluffs and Point Arena Lighthouse is fantastic. The neighborhood is quiet.

This home is wonderful and it’s location is perfect. Close distance to the beach, hiking trails and otter point and lighthouse . Nice quiet neighborhood. Pet friendly. Home is well stocked with all you need. Blankets, etc.

Really enjoyed our stay at Hinoki House, which is an incredible architectural experience in and of itself.

Had a very pleasant stay. House was clean, warm, and inviting-we felt like we were on vacation in a Japanese resort quality spot. It was located in an upscale neighborhood.

Hinoki House was the perfect base for 3 of us for a week while attending a family reunion on the Mendocino Coast. It provided a peaceful, restful spot to regroup after the evening gatherings elsewhere. Everyone agreed it was the best house out of the 9 different houses rented. The architectural details provide endless fascination, and great location within easy walking distance of Point Cabrillo lighthouse and other coastal walks. Just a short drive up to Fort Bragg or down to Mendocino. We would love to spend more time at Hinoki House.

This is a stunning house. Very peaceful and quiet except for the distant sounds of sea lions.

We loved staying at Hinoki House. We loved the look and feel of the house. Everything was immaculate, the check in and check out was easy. Love all the windows, especially from the upstairs bedroom. A larger bed would have been appreciated.

Interesting japanese-style house in good location. Good area to walk with parks nearby. Good location between Mendocino and Ft. Bragg.

The house design is interesting, it’s functionality limited. While there’s lots of windows, the upstairs spacious BR has calming views. Downstairs BR could be called “cozy” (low bed, step sideways to get around bed). LR comfortable but dark. Meadow is really a small natural grass area connected to neighbors large mowed area. House good for 2 people, tighter for 4. One trail connecting to lighthouse, otherwise drive to many map marked trails.

We loved this house, an architectural delight when it comes to Japanese building structures. The setting is perfect in its natural surroundings.
One drawback: the lower level bedroom lacks a closet and offers no clothes hooks, that issue needs to be addressed.

The Hinoki House was a fun and enjoyable place to simply relax and enjoy the Mendocino area. The house was spacious and very well appointed. Each of the two bedrooms (one downstairs and on upstairs) each had their own bathrooms and generous closet spaces. Both also has stand alone fireplaces, already stocked with wood for burning. Kitchen was well equipped, although with just minimal but well received appointments. All the kitchen appliances, including the range, oven, dishwasher, etc, appear new or barely used. Large personal yard, quite neighborhood and very peaceful and serene.
